The Serendipity of a Life Well Lived – Travel Blog by Eleanor

Laughter Is the Best Medicine

They say laughter is the best medicine, and it truly is — free, contagious, and available to all. Yet, in the seriousness of life, many have forgotten how to laugh. Some have even lost their sense of humor altogether. But laughter isn’t just a frivolous escape — it’s a gift from God, a healing balm for the soul.

Why We Should Laugh Every Day

Laughter lifts our spirits, eases our burdens, and connects us with others in a deeply human way. It breaks down walls, softens hardened hearts, and reminds us that life, though often difficult, is still full of wonder, beauty, and grace.

When we laugh, we let go. We release stress, tension, and fear. We take ourselves a little less seriously and remember that joy still exists — even in the middle of chaos.

Proverbs 17:22 says it best:

“A cheerful heart is good medicine, but a crushed spirit dries up the bones.”Laughter is not just emotional — it’s physical, mental, and even spiritual healing.

God’s Gift of Joie de Vivre

God created us not just to survive — but to truly live. The French phrase joie de vivre — meaning “joy of living” — captures this divine spark within us. It’s the ability to embrace life with enthusiasm, gratitude, laughter, and
zest.

The joy of life isn’t about perfect circumstances. It’s about a heart tuned to the rhythms of grace, able to find delight in the ordinary and humor in the unexpected.

Jesus said in John 10:10:

“I came that they may have life, and have it more abundantly.”Abundant life includes laughter. It includes dancing, rejoicing, and even silly moments that lift our souls.

When we embrace joie de vivre, we reflect the joy of our Creator — a God who smiles, who delights in His children, and who fills our hearts with gladness.

The Importance of a Light-Hearted Outlook

Many people walk around carrying heavy loads — of worry, anger, comparison, and pride. But a light-hearted person knows how to see humor in life’s imperfections. They laugh at themselves, forgive quickly, and find joy in simple things.

Laughter doesn’t mean we ignore our problems — it means we choose not to let those problems define us. We lean into joy, knowing that it is part of God’s design for our wholeness.

Ecclesiastes 3:4 reminds us:

“A time to weep and a time to laugh, a time to mourn and a time to dance.”

Cultivating a Joyful Spirit

To laugh freely is to live fully — with resilience, with grace, and with hope.

So how do we regain our laughter?

  • Spend time with joyful people who uplift your spirit.
  • Watch or read something that makes you smile.
  • Don’t take yourself too seriously.
  • Look for joy in everyday moments — even the ordinary and mundane.
  • Let go of perfection. Embrace playfulness.

As author Victor Borge once said:

“Laughter is the shortest distance between two people.”

And as Psalm 126:2 declares:

“Our mouths were filled with laughter, our tongues with songs of joy. Then it was said among the nations, ‘The Lord has done great things for them.’”

When we laugh, we echo the goodness of God. Let your joy — your joie de vivre — be your testimony.

Affirmation

I embrace the joy of life. I welcome laughter into my heart. I am grateful for the moments that make me smile and the people who bring light into my days. I receive God’s gift of joy and share it freely with the world around me.

Closing Prayer

Lord, thank You for the precious gift of laughter and the joy of living. Fill my days with light-hearted moments and lift my spirit with Your peace. Help me to live with joie de vivre — to find delight in Your creation, humor in life’s surprises, and hope even in trials. Let my laughter reflect Your joy and be a light to others. Amen
